His childhood was modest and unassuming. In 1960, his family migrated from Burma to India and settled in Rajkot. From a young age, Vijay showed an inclination towards serving the nation. After his family moved to Gujarat, his father started a trading firm. Rupani later worked as a stock broker in his early days.
Vijay Rupani began his political journey as an active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during his college days. He later became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and joined the Jan Sangh in 1971. A vocal opponent of the Emergency imposed between 1975 and 1977, he was imprisoned during that period for his protests.
From 1978 to 1981, Rupani served as a pracharak for the RSS.
His first major administrative role came in 1996 when he was elected as the mayor of Rajkot, a position he held until 1997. In 2006, he was appointed chairman of Gujarat Tourism.
Rupani went on to serve as the Gujarat BJP’s General Secretary on four occasions. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha, where he served as a Member of Parliament from 2006 to 2012.
In 2014, he was inducted into Anandiben Patel’s cabinet and was given charge of the ministries of water supply, transport, labour, and employment. His political ascent continued, and on 7 August 2016, Vijay Rupani was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
In the 2017 Assembly elections, he led the BJP to victory and became Chief Minister for a second term. However, on 11 September 2021, he unexpectedly resigned from the post.
Later , Rupani took on the responsibility of BJP in-charge for Punjab.
SEBI, the market regulator in 2011 had accused 22 groups, including a relative of Vijay Rupani, of being involved in "manipulative trading" through a method called pump and dump. Then in November 2017, SEBI passed an order without a hearing, and fined Vijay Rupani HUF ₹1,50,000 (around $3,000) for creating a false impression in the stock market. Vijay Rupani HUF later said that the fine was imposed without being given a chance to present their side.
In his 2017 election affidavit, Vijay Rupani declared total assets amounting to ₹9.08 crore. At that time, he had movable assets—including cash and jewellery—worth ₹3.45 crore. His wife, Anjaliben, had movable assets valued at ₹1.97 crore. According to the affidavit, Rupani owned jewellery weighing 132 grams and valued at ₹3.83 lakh, while his wife had jewellery weighing 486 grams, worth ₹14.11 lakh.
