Patel became a teacher in 2018 in Dungarpur. He left the teaching profession in 2023 to contest the assembly election from Bagidora on a Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) ticket, challenging the then-sitting MLA and Congress leader Mahendrajeet Singh Malviya.

However, Patel lost his first election by a significant margin. Malviya won the seat with 1,01,742 votes, while Patel secured 60,387 votes and finished second.

Fate, however, had different plans for Patel. A few months later, Malviya switched allegiance and joined the BJP, which triggered a by-election for the Bagidora seat in 2024, held alongside the Lok Sabha polls. In this second attempt, Jaykrishna Patel emerged victorious, defeating the BJP candidate by a wide margin and finally becoming an MLA.
