Asaduddin Owaisi early life

Before entering politics, Asaduddin Owaisi was pursuing a law degree in London. Upon his return to India, his father, Salahuddin Owaisi, was serving as the president of the party.

Apart from his legal and political background, Owaisi has also had a stint in cricket. In a Facebook post dated 21st May 2019, he wrote:

"I bowled for my university team till my graduation at Nizam College in Hyderabad, but my cricket stint ended after representing the South Zone inter-university U-25s in the Vizzy Trophy."

"Once we were playing for Osmania University against Bangalore University, who had Venkatesh Prasad in their ranks. This makes me feel good recalling as a medium pacer, so I’m telling you — I ended up getting six wickets and that earned me selection in the South Zone university team." he added in that post.

Asaduddin Owaisi Political Career

Asaduddin Owaisi is considered one of the prominent hardline Muslim leaders in India. His family has long been involved in Muslim politics. Owaisi’s grandfather, Abdul Wahad Owaisi, revived the political party Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen in 1957, renaming it All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Politics runs in his blood—he inherited it from his father, Salahuddin Owaisi, who served as a Member of Parliament from Hyderabad six times.

Asaduddin Owaisi began his political career in 1994 by contesting from the Charminar Assembly seat in Hyderabad, a stronghold of AIMIM since 1967. He won his first election with a margin of around 40,000 votes. In the 1999 assembly elections, he defeated Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate Syed Shah Nurul Haq Qadri with an impressive margin of 93,000 votes.

Owaisi contested his first Lok Sabha election in 2004 and won the Hyderabad seat.He retained the seat in 2009. Despite a strong pro-Modi wave in the 2014 general elections, Owaisi secured victory by a margin of 200,000 votes. In 2019, he further extended his lead, winning by 283,000 votes. In 2024, BJP tried to put a challenge in the form of candidate Madhavi Lata against Owaisi but he won with a decisive margin and scored 661,981 votes against Lata’s 323894 votes.

Asaduddin Owaisi has recently been in the news for strongly defending India’s interests following the Indian armed forces' strikes against Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. Known for his often controversial remarks, Owaisi surprised many by taking a bold nationalist stance and sharply criticizing Pakistan. His speech was widely appreciated across the country for its patriotic tone and for rising above partisan politics.

Controversy

Owaisi is known for making statements which stir the pot. Several of his statements have created controversies across the country.

For instance, he sparked controvery during the second day of proceedings in the 18th Lok Sabha by concluding his oath with the slogan “Jai Palestine.” The move drew strong reactions across the political spectrum and reignited debates around his ideological positions.

A few years ago, during a public rally in Latur district, he made headlines by stating that nowhere in the Constitution is it written that one must say “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.” He added, “I do not chant that slogan,” drawing criticism from several nationalist quarters.

In another instance, according to a 2024 news report, Owaisi delivered an emotional speech in the Lok Sabha, asserting that the Babri Masjid would remain eternal at the site of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. He concluded his address with the slogan “Babri Masjid Zindabad,” once again triggering strong political and public reactions.

In 2018, Asaduddin Owaisi strongly criticized the Modi government over its stance on the issue of triple talaq. Expressing his displeasure, Owaisi accused the Centre of using the promise of justice for Muslim women as a mere pretext. He claimed that the real target of the government's actions was not triple talaq itself, but the Sharia (Islamic law).

Assets

According to 2024 data, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi owns movable assets worth Rs 2.80 crore, which include cash, gold, insurance policies, and other financial instruments. His wife holds movable assets valued at Rs 15.71 lakh.

In terms of immovable assets, Owaisi owns properties worth Rs 16.01 crore, including commercial and agricultural land. His wife shares ownership in immovable assets worth Rs 4.90 crore. Additionally, Owaisi owns another residential property in the Misrigunj area of Hyderabad.
