A part of AAP since its inception, Atishi was given the middle name 'Marlena' by her parents which is said to be a portmanteau of Marx and Lenin. A member of Kejriwal cabinet, She became the face of the government after both Kejriwal & Manish Sisodia were in the prison over charges related to alleged excise policy scam. She is the third woman CM of Delhi after stepping into the shoes of Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dixit.

Atishi completed her education in Delhi, finishing her schooling and undergraduate studies in History at St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, in 2001. She then continued her academic journey at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. As per the affidavit filed in Delhi assembly elections, her highest education qualification is Master of science from University of Oxford in 2006.

Atishi Marlena Singh Family

Atishi was born to Delhi University professors Vijay Singh Tomar and Tripta Wahi on 8 June 1981 in a Tomar Rajput family of Punjabi background. Her Husband Praveen Singh Praveen Singh, holds degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the Indian Institute of Management ( IIM).

Atishi Marlena Singh Political Career

Atishi's political career began with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2013, where she quickly became a pivotal figure in shaping the party's policies. From July 2015 to April 2018, she served as an advisor to Education Minister Manish Sisodia. During this time, she was instrumental in enhancing the infrastructure of Delhi's government schools, establishing School Management Committees (SMCs) in accordance with the Right to Education Act, tightening regulations to prevent arbitrary fee hikes by private schools, and launching the Happiness Curriculum.

Her activism rose to prominence during the Jal Satyagraha in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, in 2015. During this period, she supported AAP leader Alok Agarwal in the protests and the ensuing legal battles. She had assumed key role after the party’s top leadership went behind the bars.

She is currently holding maximum number of ministries including water, education & PWD.


Atishi Marlena Singh Political History

Started at the grassroots in AAP. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Atishi ran as the AAP candidate for the East Delhi constituency. She finished third, losing to BJP's Gautam Gambhir by a margin of 477,000 votes.

During the 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly election, Atishi contested from the Kalkaji constituency in South Delhi. She won the seat by defeating Bharatiya Janata Party's Dharambir Singh with a margin of 11,422 votes.

In 2023 she was appointed as a Cabinet Minister in the Delhi Government.

Outgoing CM Arvind Kejriwal’s sudden announcement of his intention of tendering resignation necessitated a meeting of party legislatures on Monday during which her names was proposed by Kejriwal and was accepted unanimously. She has an uphill task to coordinate with the Lt governor and the union government & also work in tandem with party Chief Arvind Kejriwal.

Controversy : Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal criticized Atishi's family for their alleged ties to Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist Afzal Guru & she accused Atishi's parents of writing mercy petitions on Guru's behalf.
