Radhakrishnan was also an athlete during his college days, excelling as a table tennis champion and a long-distance runner. He had a keen interest in cricket and volleyball as well. From the age of 17, he became involved with organizations like the RSS and the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Actively engaged in student politics, Radhakrishnan built a strong local presence.
His success in table tennis helped him gain popularity and a wide network among the youth, which later supported his rise within the BJP organization.
In 1974, Radhakrishnan was elected to the state executive committee of the Jan Sangh. His major political breakthrough came in 1998 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Coimbatore constituency in Tamil Nadu.
At that time, Coimbatore had recently experienced a major terrorist attack, and Radhakrishnan focused his campaign on issues of development and security, leading to a significant electoral victory. He was re-elected in 1999, serving two consecutive terms as a Member of Parliament.
From 2004 to 2007, he served as the president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit. During this period, he played a key role in forging an alliance with the AIADMK after the DMK severed its ties with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
As state president, he led a 93-day rath yatra, promoting causes such as the interlinking of rivers in India, the eradication of untouchability, and raising awareness against terrorism.
In February 2023, the central government appointed him as the Governor of Jharkhand. He later took on additional responsibilities as the Governor of Telangana and Puducherry. Since July 2024, he has been serving as the Governor of Maharashtra.
According to media reports, C. P. Radhakrishnan's total net worth is estimated at ₹64.75 crore. This includes assets worth ₹67.11 crore, offset by liabilities amounting to ₹2.37 crore.
In 2012, C. P. Radhakrishnan was court-arrested in Mettupalayam during a protest against the authorities' failure to take action against those responsible for attacking an RSS worker.
