Diya Kumari Political Career

Her political journey has been quite a story. Born into the royal family of Jaipur and having "blue blood," she comes from a family that has long been involved in politics.

Her step-grandmother, Gayatri Devi, was a critic of Indira Gandhi's policies. When she entered electoral politics, she was the natural choice to represent Jaipur in the Lok Sabha, winning three times from this seat, with her maiden election victory in 1962. Gayatri Devi was jailed in Tihar for about six months during the Emergency period.

Diya Kumari’s father, Brigadier Bhawani Singh, also contested elections. He ran as a Congress candidate for the Jaipur Parliamentary seat in 1989 but lost to BJP’s Girdharlal Bhargava.

Diya Kumari entry in Politics

Diya Kumari's entry into electoral politics was sudden. She fought her first assembly election in 2013. However, unlike her ancestors, who made Jaipur their political arena, she chose Sawai Madhopur. During that time, senior leader Dr. Kirodilal Meena, who had left the BJP and formed his own party, the NPP, was contesting from Sawai Madhopur.

It was considered his stronghold, and he himself was the candidate. Diya Kumari surprised many by defeating the Meena strongman and becoming the MLA from this constituency. The BJP, led by Vasundhara Raje, had a landslide victory in the 2013 elections, winning 162 out of 200 seats in the Rajasthan assembly — the highest tally ever for the BJP in the state. Prior to this, the Congress party had won 153 seats in the 1998 assembly elections.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Diya Kumari was fielded by the BJP from the Rajsamand seat and won comfortably. Gradually, she became a seasoned leader by gaining experience in electoral politics. In the 2023 Rajasthan assembly elections, she was shifted back to state politics and given a ticket from Vidyadhar Nagar, considered one of the safest seats for the BJP in Rajasthan.

The incumbent MLA, Narpat Singh Rajvi, the son-in-law of former Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, was denied a ticket by the party, signaling that the party had bigger plans for Diya Kumari. She won again comfortably.

Known as Princess Diya Kumari, she was named Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, the largest state in India.
