During his postgraduate studies, Maderna was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and became actively involved in the Indian freedom movement. Upon returning to Rajasthan, he aligned himself with prominent Jat leader Baldev Ram Mirdha to launch a large-scale agrarian movement through the Marwar Kisan Sabha and later the Rajasthan Kisan Sabha. This collaborative effort led to the abolition of jagirdari in the former Marwar and Mewar regions, ultimately granting land ownership rights to the cultivators.

Parasram Maderna Political Career

Parsaram Maderna’s political journey began under the guidance of the veteran leader Baldevram Mirdha. He was elected as a sarpanch for the first time in 1953. Five years later, in 1957, he became an MLA from Osian and was appointed a minister in the Rajasthan government.

It is often said that during the 1970s and 1980s, the Maderna family held considerable influence in Rajasthan politics. Despite this prominence, Parsaram Maderna faced his first electoral defeat in 1985. However, he made a strong comeback in 1989, winning from Bhopalgarh and subsequently becoming the President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee.

In 1993, when Bhairon Singh Shekhawat formed the government in Rajasthan, Parsaram Maderna was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition. At that time, he also held the post of state Congress chief.

Between 1957 and 2003, Maderna was elected as an MLA nine times. Over a political career spanning more than four decades, he served as minister in various key departments of the Rajasthan government, including Administration, Revenue, Panchayati Raj, Cooperatives, Forest, Agriculture, and Energy.

Parasram Maderna Controversy

There was no controversy directly associated with Parasram Maderna. He was a widely respected figure, not only in Rajasthan’s political landscape but also across the country. However, his son, Mahipal Maderna, became the center of a major controversy, which dealt a significant blow to the Maderna family’s reputation.

In his political career, Mahipal Maderna served as an MLA twice. During one of his terms, he was entrusted with the portfolio of Water Resources and Public Health Engineering, a responsibility he handled commendably. However, his name surfaced in the high-profile Bhanwari Devi abduction and murder case, which led to his arrest. Following his arrest, he was removed from his ministerial post and remained in jail thereafter. Mahipal Maderna passed away in year 2021.
