The Reddy family holds a significant amount of power in Andhra Pradesh politics. Both Rajasekhar Reddy and his son Jaganmohan Reddy are well-known in Andhra politics for their unique personalities. Jaganmohan Reddy joined the Congress to begin his political career. However, with the passing of his father, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, in 2009, Jaganmohan Reddy founded Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress, a new political party in year 2011, as the Congress party consistently disregarded him.

It is because of the success of this party, that Jaganmohan is presently the National President of the YSR Congress Party as well as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. After splitting from the Congress and founding a new party, he rose to the position of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister in under 7 years.

Jaganmohan Reddy Political Career

The political career of the YS Jaganmohan Reddy began in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, where he was the Congress candidate from the Kadapa parliamentary constituency and won. His father YS Rajasekhar Reddy died in a helicopter crash just months after the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. He left the Congress in 2010 and formed a new party named YSR Congress in 2011.

In the Andhra Pradesh elections of 2012, his party secured 17 assembly seats and 1 Lok Sabha seat. In the 2014, assembly elections, his party got 67 seats out of 175 seats. After this, in the assembly elections held in 2019, his YSR Congress got 149 seats out of 175, and with absolute majority, he took oath as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.


Jaganmohan Reddy Political History

In 1999–2000, Jaganmohan Reddy launched his own company before going into politics. Established a modest electricity firm in Sandur, Karnataka, and later grew it to include the states in the northeast. His firm expanded quickly once his father, Rajasekhar Reddy, was appointed Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 2004.

Subsequently, he began making investments in other industries. His first political career began in 2009 when he was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Lok Sabha from Kadapa. Due to the Congress Party's persistent disregard for him following his father's passing, he resigned from both the MP position and the party.


Through perseverance and hard effort, he not only broke away from his father's political heritage and battled his way to the top of the state's political hierarchy. In addition to dealing with a political problem, he had to start his new political party after his father passed away unexpectedly in an accident.


Established his political party, ran in the by-elections, and won handily. His party had an outstanding year in 2014, solidifying its place as the principal opposition force in Andhra Pradesh politics. In 2017, Jaganmohan Reddy, the President of the YSR Congress Party and the leader of the opposition, finished the 'Praja Sankalp Yatra' in Andhra Pradesh.

This trip spanned over 3,000 kilometers. In the 2019 assembly elections, Jaganmohan benefited from this visit as his party won 151 out of 175 seats. After becoming the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on May 30, 2019, he solidified his position as the dominant figure in southern politics.

Through numerous public welfare programs like Jagananna Amma Vodi and Navaratnalu, he has attempted to improve the economic situation of the common people throughout his time as Chief Minister. Nine social programs for women, farming, education, and health are included in Navratnalu. On the other hand, the Jagananna Amma Vodi program offers cash support to those who are below the poverty level.


YS Jaganmohan Reddy Achievements

YS Jaganmohan Reddy was first elected to the Lok Sabha from the Andhra Pradesh parliamentary seat of Kadapa in 2009; and operated Sakshi, a news outlet and newspaper. Departed the Congress Party to find the YSR Congress in March 2011 after resigning as an MP on November 29, 2010. Defeated his rivals in the Kadapa parliamentary constituency by almost 5 lakh votes.

Praja Sankalp Yatra was the name of the 2017 Andhra Pradesh padayatra that he led as the head of the opposition and President of the YSR Congress Party. He visited 125 assembly constituencies throughout the course of this 430-day padyatra, covering a distance of almost 3000 kilometers. ‘Ravali Jagan, Kavali Jagan’ became the tagline for this padyatra. After the YSR Congress won an overwhelming majority in the 2019 assembly elections, Jagan Mohan was appointed Andhra Pradesh's chief minister.
