After winning in Jodhpur Lok Sabha seat, he ran in his first assembly election in 1977. He went to Delhi for the first time in 1980. He was chosen as an MP for Jodhpur in the 8th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Lok Sabha elections in 1984, 1991, 1996, and 1998. He also represented Sardarpura seat in the Rajasthan assembly for six terms from 1999 to 2023. He served as Rajasthan's chief minister three times in 1998, 2008, and 2018.
