M.K Stalin also known as Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin is a strong political figure in South India. Four days after his birth, Joseph Stalin, the leader of Soviet Russia, passed away. During a meeting to express condolences for the death of Soviet Russian leader Joseph Stalin, his father, M Karunanidhi, who served as Tamil Nadu's chief minister five times, decided to name his four-day-old child after Stalin, hence the moniker MK Stalin. Stalin, the third child of M. Karunanidhi and Dayalu Ammal, his second wife, was born in Tamil Nadu.

MK Stalin has come a long way from being arrested to becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu during the Emergency. Currently serving as Tamil Nadu's chief minister and a well-liked politician in the nation.

MK Stalin Political History

The Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin started his political career at the age of 14 by campaigns alongside his father, M Karunanidhi. However, he began his active political career in 1968 when he and his friends founded the DMK Youth Wing. In the early days of the Youth Wing, Stalin travelled throughout Tamil Nadu and engaged in grassroots politics. Stalin served as the secretary of the DMK Youth Wing from 1968 till 2018.


Stalin was chosen to serve on the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) General Committee in 1973. Because Stalin opposed the emergency, the then Indira government imprisoned him under the Maintenance of the Internal Security Act (MISA). Stalin gained notoriety for his opposition to the emergency, which occasionally helped him politically.


On 30 June 1976, Stalin led a protest rally in Tiruvallur town of Chennai against the Emergency. Following this, he was taken into custody along with other DMK leaders and his father, M. Karunanidhi. Stalin's imprisonment during the emergency had a profound effect on him, and as a result, he started to advocate for civil liberties and human rights.

The day Stalin was freed was January 23, 1977. Stalin's imprisonment during the Emergency gave rise to a new political persona; before this, he was solely recognized as Karunanidhi's son.


M. K. Stalin Political Party

In 1984, Stalin ran for office for the first time for the Thousand Lights assembly seat, but he was unsuccessful. He was initially elected as an MLA from this seat in 1989. He then won elections from this seat in 1996,2001,2006,2011,2016, and 2021 to get into the assembly. From 2011 to 2016, Stalin served as the Tamil Nadu Assembly's Leader of the opposition. Stalin took the oath of office as Tamil Nadu's chief minister on May 7, 2021.

Stalin has run nine times for assembly, winning seven of those contests to become an MLA. During this period, he has contested elections from Thousand Lights 6 times and the Kolathur assembly seat thrice.

MK Stalin was elected mayor of Chennai for the first time in 1996 and again in 2001. After this, the Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws Act 2002 was passed by the then chief minister, J. Jayalalitha. One individual cannot be chosen to hold two positions in the government thanks to this law. The Jayalalithaa government proposed this bill deliberately to remove Stalin from his Chennai mayoralty.

The Madras High Court got involved in this case, ruled that the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act of 1919 prohibited someone from serving as mayor twice in a row, and declared the law to be invalid.

MK Stalin as Chief Minister

In the 2021 assembly elections, MK Stalin contested under the banner of the "Secular Progressive Alliance," and he won 159 out of 234 seats by giving him an absolute majority. Stalin took over as Tamil Nadu's chief minister after the coalition leader and went to work despite the coronavirus outbreak.

To address the people's demands, hospitals in mission mode restored beds, ambulances, oxygen, and other medical supplies. He also wore PPE suits as he visited hospitals throughout the state to find out how the general public was doing. An Economic Advisory Council was created to address the state's economic issues following the Corona pandemic.

Tamil Nadu became the state with the least amount of destruction in Corona as a result of this that so directed that qualified applicants from every state caste be appointed to positions as temple priests in the Human Resources and CE Department.

MK Stalin placed a strong emphasis on everyone's ability to practice their religion freely. K. Stalin ranked highest among all Indian Chief Ministers in the Mood of the Nation survey, which was conducted by India Today Magazine. Stalin garnered 42 percent of the vote. Stalin declared in September 2021 that Periyar's birthday would be observed annually as a Social Justice Day.

In the process of reviewing and resolving the legal cases that the previous state government had filed. MK Stalin withdrew the cases that had been brought against 5570 journalists and protestors.

In addition, several initiatives were put into place, including the Chief Minister Dashboard, Chief Minister Breakfast Scheme, Ilam Thedi Kalvi, Ungal Thoghuthiyail Mudhalamaichar, Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam, First Agriculture Budget of Tamil Nadu, and Green Tamil Nadu Mission.

MK Stalin was dubbed as the "Father of the City" for the numerous development projects he completed during his first team as mayor, including the building of significant flyovers and small bridges, the renovation of government schools, Hogenakkal Jai Yojana and Singara Chennai initiatives, etc. Following M Karunanidhi's death in 2018, MK Stalin assumed leadership of the DMK party and led it forward.

At this time, Stalin sought to broaden his support base among the populace in the state by organizing grassroots movements. Under his direction, several state political parties established the "Secular Progressive Alliance," which aimed to advance inclusive and egalitarian ideologies in society.
