The Bihar State Election Commission has released detailed statistics for the first two phases of the Assembly elections, marking the beginning of an intense political showdown.
In the first phase, elections will be held for 121 assembly seats where 1,314 candidates are contesting. The second phase will see 1,302 candidates vying for 122 seats.
A total of 37,513,302 voters will exercise their franchise in the first phase, while 37,013,556 voters are eligible to vote in the second phase reflecting Bihar’s vast democratic participation.
Contrasting constituencies: From smallest to largest
In terms of geographical area, Bankipur is the smallest assembly constituency, spread across just 16.239 sq km, whereas Suryagarha is the largest, covering 624.751 sq km.
When it comes to voter population, Barbigha has the fewest voters at 231,998, while Digha tops the list with 457,657 voters.
The first phase is crucial for both the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Janata Dal (United), as it will test their organizational strength and the popularity of their leaders.
For Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of the Opposition and former Deputy Chief Minister, the first phase is a make-or-break moment as he contests from Raghopur a traditional RJD stronghold.
On the NDA side, both Deputy Chief Ministers are in the fray - Samrat Choudhary from Tarapur and Vijay Kumar Sinha from Lakhisarai. Their performance will be viewed as a direct reflection of the NDA’s standing in the state.
Adding a touch of stardom, Bhojpuri film superstar Khesari Lal Yadav is contesting from Chhapra, while popular folk singer Maithili Thakur is in the race from Alinagar. The first phase of polling will decide not only the fate of seasoned politicians but also the political futures of these celebrity candidates.
Voting for the first phase will take place on November 6, setting the tone for the rest of the Bihar Assembly elections. With both the Mahagathbandhan and the NDA fielding their strongest contenders, the battle lines are clearly drawn.
The results of the first phase will likely determine the political momentum heading into the subsequent phases and could even shape Bihar’s political landscape for years to come.
